Study of Articular Cartilage Repair (STAR Study)
NWOS is one of 20 sites in the United States and Canada to participate in a new international Study of Treatment for Articular Repair (STAR), sponsored by Genzyme Biosurgery. This research study will compare different treatment options for injury to articular cartilage in the knee. NWOS is one of the leading surgical practices in Washington and Northern Idaho for the treatment of knee injuries.
In 1997, a new product called Carticel® was approved for a surgical procedure called autologous chondrocyte implantation or ACI, for the treatment of damaged knee cartilage that has failed a prior surgical procedure. In this procedure, a small piece of healthy cartilage is removed from the injured patients knee and used to grow millions of new cartilage cells in a laboratory. The new cells are then implanted into the knee to repair the damaged area. This study will compare the results of using Carticel to results found in older treatment options for cartilage injury including debridement, abrasion, microfracture or drilling.
This study will help surgeons determine which treatment option offers the most durable repair, said Robert Brewster, M.D., co-investigator of the NWOS study. This is an important issue we need to better understand in treating cartilage injuries.
