Many cases can now be handled using ambulatory surgical procedures rather than inpatient surgery, especially those involving the hand or foot.
Treatment of orthopaedic injuries that previously involved extensive surgery with large incisions, a hospital stay, and a prolonged recovery period, can now be performed using arthroscopic surgery. With small incision sites and direct access to most areas of the joint, the surgeons can diagnose and surgically correct a vast array of joint problems such as arthritis and ligament tears. Arthroscopic surgery is typically used for the knee, shoulder, ankle, wrist, and elbow.
Normal activities such as walking, golfing, tennis, gardening, and playing with children are just a dream to many people suffering from arthritis, musculo-skeletal disease, or joint injury. For these patients, joint replacement, such as hip replacement, knee replacement or shoulder replacement, may be the only alternative to chronic and debilitating pain. These operations are performed when other measures have failed to help patients relieve their pain and restore mobility.
Before surgery is recommended, other more conservative measures should be tried, such as weight loss, anti-inflammatory medication, orthotics, steroid injections, and physical therapy. If, despite these efforts, functional limitations persist, the physicians at NWOS can help restore a more active, pain-free, and independent lifestyle.
