Kneecap Bursitis

What is Kneecap Bursitis?

There are small, jelly-like sacs called bursae throughout your body that create a protective layer between your muscles, tendons, and joints. Kneecap bursitis, or prepatellar bursitis, is a condition in which one of these bursa sacs becomes inflamed, typically in conjunction with an injury or overuse. For example, if you take part in a sport like distance running or soccer, you may be at risk of developing knee bursitis.

Knee bursitis symptoms include pain and swelling in the knee joint. The pain is usually intense and sharp in the initial stages of the condition and may develop into a dull ache.

Treatment

Physical therapy and pain medications can alleviate the symptoms of knee bursitis, but these methods usually do little to treat the root of the condition. See a NW Orthopaedic Specialist to find out what knee bursitis treatment options are right for you. Request an appointment online, or call 888-660-2663.
